The biggest weekend was July 22 and 23 when the weather moderated a little and made the guided tour among the old engines more comfortable. Approximately 1,200 showed on those two days.

Pridemore said people are "coming from all over." The tours are free and there is no actual registration of the guests, but the rangers have met many from overseas. So far this year, the Steamtown tour has entertained visitors from Germany, England, Wales, Scotland, France and India, she reported. There are also quite a few Canadians who have shown interest. Foreign visitors are usually here on business or visiting relatives. Many stay at The Hilton. Out-of-state visitors are mostly die-hard rail fans who read or heard about Steamtown in old newspapers and magazines, and made a special effort to get here. While they are disappointed at not getting to ride a steam train, they are usually satisfied with the tour and often promise to come back when the museum is completed and the excursions resumed. Ranger Pridemore said one rail buff from Chicago was the most disappointed so far.

He travels around the country just to ride steam trains. "There was no way we could please him," Pridemore said with a shrug. Last week the park service moved the famous "Big Boy" locomotive to a different place behind the station in order to give people coming into the Downtown area a better look at this classic piece of equipment. That move also coincides with the arrival and showing of a 20- minute film on the huge loco-' motive. The engine was specially built for the Union Railroad to pull heavy loads over the Rocky Mountains.

The film was recently given to the Park Service by the rail carrier.
