Scrantonian Tribune, Thursday, August 31, 1989 13 itbess collapses during Ba'kkers trial that no fraud was committed because no sales were made Instead, defense attorney George Davis said, the partnerships were gifts from Bakker to people who gave him money. Nelson said that after his discussion with Bakker and Dortch, who has pleaded guilty to four of the 24 counts and agreed to testify against Bakker, a committee was named to resolve partnership issues. But the central issue, whether too many partnerships had been offered, remained unsolved treated for dehydration and released. U.S. District Judge Robert Potter recessed the trial for the afternoon, saying nothing of that sort had ever happened in his courtroom.

Nelson testified that he warned Bakker and his top PTL deputy, Richard Dortch, that PTL was offering far too many lifetime partnerships to its followers. PTL sold these partnership for $1,000 in exchange for three days annual accommodations for life at the ministrys Heritage USA resort in Fort Mill, S.C. The partnership are the central issue in 24 counts of federal fraud, and conspiracy against Bakker. I met with Pastor Dortch and explained I thought we had a problem," said Nelson, who was PTLs vice president of partner relations. He told me not to worry about it, that we didnt have a problem, so I went to Mr, Bakkers dressing room and he told me the same thing.

He said, These are not sales, these are gifts. That statement is crucial to the defense, which said in opening arguments Monday not claim faith healing in Nelsons case, This is the real Jim Bakker praying for his enemies," the Rev. Paul Mays, a Pentecostal minister from Jacksonville, and a longtime Bakker friend, told reporters during the commotion. Nelson said he was so nervous about his testimony that he had not eaten for two days. He was clearly shaken as he was wheeled from the courtroom on a stretcher, and so was Bakker, who was trembling.

Nelson was taken to Presbyterian Hospital, where he was Hospital, jumped to her feet and said, He has fainted." She rushed from the jury box to Nelsons side, adding, Im a nurse." A marshal lifted Nelson from the witness stand to the floor, and Bakker rushed to hik side, knelt on the marble floor and began to pray. Nelson regained consciousness about a minute later and clutched Bakkers hand. Bakker is a charismatic who believes in the gifts of the Holy Spirit prophesy, speaking in tongues, the power of prayer and faith healing but he did Comerford named to regulatory board panel, the release stated The IRRC was reauthorized and continued in existence until Dec. 31, 1993, under legislation passed by the general assembly and signed by the governor on June 30. Comerford term is for three years.

He will replace John McGinley Jr. on the panel. HARRISBURG Senate Democratic floor leader Robert -J. Mellow Wednesday appointed city council president Thomas Comerford Jr. as a member of the newly reauthorized Independent Regulatory Review Commission.

The five-member commission is charged with the responsibility of oversight and review of rules and regulations promulgated by executive branch boards, commissions, departments and other agencies of state government. "Having worked as my administrative assistant for 10' years, from 1973 to 1983, 1 know that Tom Comerford will do an outstanding job as a member of the body which passes on regulations intended to the laws of the general assembly," Mellow was quoted in a release issued by his office Wednesday. Comerford thus far is the only representative from northeastern Pennsylvania to be appointed to the newly reestablished regulatory review Scrantonian Tribune -JERRY PIFER NOT TODAY Exits and entrances to and from Main Avenue off the North Scranton Expressway are closed this week while Pennsylvania Department of Transportation workers resurface the roads.
